Ometepe

Situated in the middle of Lake Nicaragua (or Lake Cocibolca) is the island of Ometepe, formed by the Maderas and Concepción volcanoes. Most ferries arrive at Moyogalpa, on the foot of Concepción. People live either at the villages below the volcanoes or in the stretch that unites them alongside Playa Santa Domingo.

Covering an area of 8,264 km2, Lake Nicaragua is the largest lake of Central America. It gives rise to an ever-blowing wind, hence the birth of a kite surf school. 

Being a perfect sweet water reservoir, the lake caters to thirsty horses.

Banana plantations not only feed the island’s inhabitants, but the fruits travel up as far as Honduras and El Salvador.

Formed by underground springs, La Presa Ojo de Agua is an amazing natural pool.

Banana trucks make up for the majority of ferry freight.

In addition to bananas, the ferry also transports people with business to do on the main land, or to visit the doctor or relatives. Truck drivers gather in the hold of the ship.
