Though rivalling with Granada since the early days, Santiago de los Caballeros de León or simply León is said to be the 'most Nicaraguan city'.

Countless churches emphasize Nicaragua’s religious, catholic culture, like the cathedral on the central square - the largest of Central America and officially called the ‘Real e Insigne Basílica de la Asunción de la Bienaventurada Virgen María’. It was constructed in the 18th and 19th century and is nowadays a UNESCO heritage site.

A popular destination for León families on Sundays is the beach town of Las Peñitas. The Virgin of Las Peñitas, a lifeguard made out of stone, overlooks the action in the water.

After soaking in the tide pools or jumping the waves, fresh sea cuisine awaits the visitors in the restaurants that lie scattered along the beach.

And the leftovers make it an attractive destination for black vultures as well.
